| First came a Renault 5 GTS.. Sold for a 75 Apple Green Bug, that lasted all of one year and was found to be more fibreglass than metal in the rear 1/2 so "patched up and P-ex'd for a Golf CC Cab.. again a year later saw me back in Aircooled with this: Dorothy (Named after her first owner I was number 3) my 1969 Notchbak, ran a "built" 1776 with Webbers Cam etc.. was as quick a Boxster S as proved on my private test track (A303) on the way to RTTS one year. As this was a VERY rare car (only 4 rhd in the uk) I bought this as a daily.. '82 Scirocco GTi with 1.8 Gti engine, Braces, Srings, shocks, G60 BBs Yoko's etc.. Was go-kart round bends as I regularly proved on my way home from work by dusting with a old-style Carrera 4 on the back road between Bicester and Thame.. Anyway I got bored (stupid!) with Dorothy one year and mention to my then missus I was thinking of selling her as we were preping her for the RTTS show and shine.. Some bloke came up and offered me enough to cover all her costs and set me up with this: 64 Splitscreen Single cab.. Not a huge amount done to "Kirby" but I did get 100 (again on a private test track) out of here which was plenty scary. at the same time as Kirby and the Skyrocket I also managed to collect: My 72 Trekker (ex Dutch Airforce) and: Yumpie, our 68 Gibralter import Fastback (owned by the Wife). We also had a T4 van (for my work), a Polo (for the wife) and a Saab 9000 (picked up as another daily while the wife used the Skyrocket until she got the Polo. Confused? So at ONE time we had: Split/Trekker/Fastback/Skyrocket/Polo/T4 and Saab (7 cars) and only 2 allocated parking spaces! They were distributed between Parent's garages and friend parking spaces.. Trekker/Split/Fastback were all sold for our wedding and Honeymoon.. The Saab was scrapped as it was getting too much trouble to fix, The (now ex) Wife sold the Polo for a newer "Open Air" model, and the Skyroket? Well she's in a lockup that's not been opened for over 2 years! My daily is now the Pearl Ghey Corrado as you all know: However with a particularly nice bonus last Spring and the impending summer I went out and bought this: An 86 Small bumper Clipper Cab (one year only) and that's probably the reason why we had such a poo summer! Sold just before Christmas.. So there you are.. my (long) history.. Now any questions?

Thanks to a low ended gearbox and Reduction boxes (a-la splt screen van) about 50! But then again it was designed to do "walking pace" in 1st gear to keep in time with troops on foot, so actually it really only had 3 gears as 1st was useless!

| And here they are, finally arrived Saturday! so a bit of a "spoiler" for Thursday's meeting.. Yeah they are 17's just don't really look it, which is nice.. will hopefully not attract too much "Traffic light racer attention" Trial fit against the car for clearance: First one on... you can guess how big was my grin at this point! All fitted and on the floor: As the Yoot of today would say it has a "phatter stance" now! Just need coilies as the new whhel/tyre combo has raised it a little, couldn't get a fag packet under before: Bit on the bright side it's just up enough not to have to worry about dragging the splitter over speed humps! | |

| Dan, they clear all the arches at the moment... and don't anticipate trouble with coilies either...
7.5 with 35 et seems spot on!

| They are cold and breezy but they don't have to be slow. They use the usual air cooled type 1 and 2 engines so they can be made to have a lot of grunt. Street legal and still do 12 seconds is possible for a bit of money...
The underneath of them is a standard type 1 so repairs on mechanical parts are simple and cheap, the body is however a little rarer but they were built with an army purpose in mind so they can take a bit of beating. Buy a ropey one and paint it army green and have some fun.

| Cold and breezy my arse! Ok yeah they can be (Mine had an Eiberspacher which looked like rats had been nesting in it so I didn't even try to get it sorted!) but when the sun's out, great fun, I have photos of driving it with the roof down, windscreen down and all 4 doors off! Now that was fun blasting through town 4 up like that!
Yeah mine was slow, 50-60 max! And a not practical 1st gear.. the early (military ones) have reduction boxes on the end of the axles which means that 1st gear was used to keep pace with marching troops.
So when mated to a 1600cc engine (originals were 1200) made 1st a bit pointless so actually only had 3 gears as I just pulled away in 2nd!
Plan was a Big 2.4 type 4 based turbo, Bin the reduction Boxes, sling in a new Berg 5-speed box and a tidy up of the body but still in primer... would have scared the living Cr@p out of the chavs!
