PostSubject: MK4 1.8T misfire   MK4 1.8T misfire I_icon_minitimeWed May 21 2008, 08:27

Afternoon all,

Having a few troubles with my car and wondered if some of the Hemel people can put me in the right direction......

last week on the way to work she gave up on me and started misfiring badly, got the AA down who instantly thought it would be the coilpacks (had one changed about 2 months ago including spark plugs) he had some spare, plugged in the laptop but no difference at all. he seemed to think it could be something to do with the harness, it was before payday so i had not much choice but to get her home, is now sitting on the driveway

I got the fault codes and they were:

17766 Cyl 2 ignition circuit - open circuit
17769 Cyl 3 ignition circuit - open circuit
17772 Cyl 4 ignition circuit - open circuit

I have looked over the net for possible solution and the only one that i found was......

THE IGNITION OPEN CIRCUIT IS CAUSED BY A HIGH RESISTANCE IN THE COIL GROUND WIRE, YOU HAVE TO RUN AN OVERLAY FROM THE COIL TO A GROUND UNDER THE BATTERY TRAY.

Problem is that was for a VR6....Im far from being a mechanic so i dont have a clue if that could be the same for a 1.8T

anyone heard of anything like this?? if you do then let us know! if not can anyone tell me a good garage to go to in Hemel? my car is stuck on my drive and getting it anywhere is gona be a nightmare or costly. I spoke to one mobile mechanic today who said... yer mate its your ECU screwed you need to go to VW.... lol not really what i wanted to hear but i would rather listen to it on here than him!

appreciate any feedback, feels like i havent gone for a drive for ages and its doing me in Sad

Morning.

A quick look at the usual forums has this information but it also relates to the error message on a vr6.

Possible Symptoms

* Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) active

Possible Causes

* Cylinder x Ignition Coil (N324) faulty
* Wiring/Connectors from/to Cylinder x Ignition Coil (N324) faulty
* Fuel Pump Relay (J17) faulty

Possible Solutions

* Check Cylinder x Ignition Coil (N324)
* Check Wiring/Connectors from/to Cylinder x Ignition Coil (N324)
* Check Fuel Pump Relay (J17)

---------

I am assuming that it was him that ran the diagnostics and not you?

For three to go is quite interesting but not uncommon as the load could effect them all. Do you know if it was number one that was replaced last time?
Check the wiring that can be seen to the coil packs first, if there are no signs of trouble then it is more likely to be at least partially resolved but fitting new coil packs.
Personally I would bite the bullet and buy three new coil packs and replace the remaining three.

Another way to check is for us to run diagnostics on the car and move the coil packs around, checking that the one good signal moves with it but tbh, it isn't going to run very well on only one cylinder. Does it tick over?

Can you also confirm that this is in a Golf with a standard diag port as I can't find them on MK2. Smile
Also have you had any other work done on the engine?

I hope everyone had a good long weekend Smile

Thanks for the reply on here, much appreciated.

The MAF was changed a few months ago along with the coolant temp sensor. The only mods are a Forge Split R and a Neuspeed P Flow filter. The car runs for about 10sec if im lucky, otherwise it wont start at all. I think it only starts when cold but still miss fires real crazy.

Previously it was only the coil pack on Cylinder 1 that was changed and the diagnostic port is located just above the ashtray if that’s what you meant lol

I looked over the harness and the only point I could see where the wires were exposed was where they connected to the coil. I cleaned these up and went to GSF and bought new coils and cleaned up the plugs. Restarted better than before but still misfired and died. Disappointed but one less thing to worry about, I looked at fault codes and the only one that was coming up was for cylinder 2 Ignition circuit – Open circuit (got this by using a code reader off ebay) I disconnected Cyl 2 and there were a few sparks from the wiring connector. Got a tad worried, sat there for a few mins gazing into the engine bay…as you do…Missus called lunch was ready and that I had promised not to work or talk about the car for the wkd lol that was the end of that day.

I followed the connections of the harness and its casing splits into 2 lots, the first going to the back of the engine, the second going under the battery. I am going to remove the battery and check connections tonight if it’s not raining.

Still maybe I should have done things the other way around and checked things over a bit more but when you don’t know what you looking for it can be difficult, honest Smile

Hopefully there will be some sort of dodgy connection staring me in the face tonight that will solve all problems……yeah right!

Thanks again and will let ya know

Ah, if you have moved to one cylinder missing then you have started to sort things out.
The free reader is good but there is a little more to the full vag com I have. Where are you in Hemel? I might be able to pop over one evening as I am working in the industrial estate near buncefield.

Maybe a short on two is causing the coil pack to give up and that then took the other two out...

Had a look under the battery.....checked a few of the connections, all seemed ok.

Retried a few things and the battery has now worn out...

Thats real good of you to offer the vag com, i dont usually get home from Luton till 6.30ish so it might be a little inconvinent for yourself. if you can spare the time it would be much appreciated if not thats no worries at all, i think im gona just have to get it to a garage in the end anyway.....

I live 2 roads from the magic rounderbout,

Next to my work in Luton i have a pretty good garage that i use but in cases like this its not the best to get to, i dont suppose you know anywhere in the Hemel area for a good garage?
