Go 9a 16v.. apparently strong enough to run 300hp all day with stock internals and a "sandwich" gasket under the head, smaller 'Bo will mean that it can spool from 1500rpm too!!!

Which is sorely tempting...

To get the best from it you have to be sure you can route the piping for in the intercooler in a way that really keeps the charge cool. There is a lot of space around the 8v engine so that is a plus but you won't have the high revs that a large Turbo set up benefits from, a smaller Turbo though and you could have an interesting package.
Thing is, how much would you really get from the 8v engine and would it be worth it finacially. The reason people do the 20vt option is that he package is so tuneable, there are a lot of kits and choices from the Golf to the Seat donor.

Ben leach from Qpeng used to run a mk1 gtd fitted with a g60 lump and used a turbo technics turbo kit for a scirocco, it had a cam and standard g60 compression had a small garrett turbo and made 228bhp @ the fly and i saw it pull a standing 1/4 @ the pod in 14.2 on its first run, also the footage of it on the rollers with 3 brave people sitting on the slam panel trying to hold on the rollers and this was in '99'

Make sure you look into fuelling and timing. Theres a rule that I can't quite remember, but its along the lines of for every pound of boost you need a degree of retardation on the ignition timing, else you'll get pre ignition. As the say on south park "pre ignition is bad, okaay"
