See the 2 litre 8v FAQ for some hints and tips, but here's some really rough guesses, assuming the mods are correctly set up, and the car was running properly anyway.
1. Cylinder Head - 10 bhp+, depending on spec and quality of job (see my signature!) £300-£600 2. Cam - 5-15 bhp depending on how wild you go for, and the spec of the rest of the engine. £150 - 250 3. ECU Chip to increase fuelling and remap timing - 3-5 on a standard car probably, but should help more on modified engines £35 4. 2 Litre bottom end. More about torque than bhp, but 5-10 bhp at a guess. £150 including gaskets, oil, etc. 5. Exhaust, air filter, drilled airbox - debateable how much you'll get over good quality standard parts. Don't bother with induction kits, but consider a good quality exhaust system with a modded engine. (Jetex, Supersprint, Milltek). A good stainless exhaust is about £300 or just over.
For a roadgoing 1.8 then 135bhp would be a good target that you'll struggle to get much beyond. With a 2.0 bottom end you could be looking at 145-155 bhp, and with an good spec 2.1 about 165.
After that you can spend huge money on throttle bodies or a turbo conversion, or medium amounts of money to convert the car to 2.0 16v (a 2.0 16v would cost less than getting 150 bhp from an 8v) do like that info. |

| Prefer the 8v over the 16v. 8v quicker off the line, you need to thrash the standard 16v to get it to perform unless you use the 2.0 16v from the mk3 golf. Think it depends if your gonna do alot of engine work, i.e. pistons, head work......... | |
